What it is

An ISBN-13 lives inside the EAN-13 numbering space under the "Bookland" prefix 978, which is how a bookshop scanner knows it is looking at a publication. Our ISBN-13 numbers are formed the same way and render as a standard EAN barcode with the digits printed beneath.

A word of candour: the official ISBN agency in each country assigns ISBNs to publishers and records the title against them. Our numbers are valid in format and unique in our ledger, but they are not recorded with the national ISBN agency. For a title that must appear in the national catalogue or with a trade distributor, obtain an agency ISBN.

Read this first. Each number we supply is a correctly formed GTIN that scans on ordinary retail equipment and lists successfully on most selling platforms. It is not entered in the GS1 registry under your business name, and a minority of platforms and chain retailers check that registry and will only take a GS1-licensed number. If your buyer or marketplace insists on GS1, get a GS1 licence instead — we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing. Not sure which code you need?

Questions people ask before buying

Is this the same as an ISBN from the national agency?

No. The agency records your title against the number in the national catalogue; we supply a correctly formed 978-range number and barcode that is unique in our ledger. Use ours for barcoding, internal cataloguing and channels that only check the format; use an agency ISBN where the catalogue entry itself matters.

Will bookshops scan it?

The barcode reads on any standard EAN-capable scanner. Whether a particular shop or distributor lists a title without an agency-registered ISBN is their policy, and some will not — please check with them first.
